Descartes Meditations - By Aleksandra Spasova
Meditation I
Method of doubt --> securing the foundation of knowledge
Relying on the senses
Using common sense
Reliable
The sceptic person
The dreaming argument
Senses - NOT Reliable
Relying on intellect
Using common sense
Reliable
The sceptic person
Evil Demon Argument
Intellect - NOT Reliable
Meditation II
Certainty in Descartes' existence
I think, therefore I exist
even if a demon deceives me, that proves that I exist
doubting means that I think
Therefore, I exist
Example: I walk , I exist
only certain it this is a thought
If it an action it'd be uncertain because it is not sure that I have a body
Meditation VI
Imagination against Understanding
Imagination requires mental effort
Not part of one's essence
You can understand something without imagining it
Chiliagon Example
Corporeal Objects
Ideas of corporeal objects
I am a finite substance, as well
Therefore, they exist
Are corporeal objects the cause of my idea of corporeal objects
God created my mind so my perception of the world is real
God is a deceiver
The only way by which God is proven to not be a deceiver is by proving that corporeal objects exist
Meditation IV
God doesn't exist (prove the statement wrong)
God created my mind, that makes mistakes
God doesn't make mistakes
Need proof that my mistakes aren't God's fault
I choose to believe something that I can't perceive something clearly and distinctly
too much freedom
I have free will
What if I choose to believe sth that I don't have a clear perception of and understand fully?
1 more item...
I have intellect
Meditation V
Ideas that my mind created
innate ideas
determine essence, natural
fabricated ideas
origins argument
basic mathematical truths
what if I forget the proof of something that I know?
I know God exists
Therefore, I shouldn't doubt myself
God created my mind
I cannot doubt
my mind tends towards truth
I should accept things that I perceive clearly and distinctly
I am the source of error
Meditation III
Factitious Ideas
Adventitious Ideas
Innate Ideas
The idea of God
It was not created by a person
Only an infinite being could create such thought
Therefore, God created the idea of himself by himself
Therefore, God exists
the sceptic person
People are finite substances
Therefore, how do we know what an infinite being is?
Ans: We understand infinite because we are finite
We have no idea of an image of an infinite being
1 more item...
Let's say God does not exist
I'm my own creator
But then, why are our powers limited?
Therefore, God exist
Another source
We cannot answer this
Therefore, God exists
Parents
Who created them?
Therefore, God exists
