Winston Churchill was one of the most important British figures of the twentieth century. He was the Prime Minister during the Second World War. He was also a brave soldier, a war correspondent, a passionate and eloquent orator, a painter and a talented writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. Winston Churchill was born on 30 November 1874.In 1939 Poland was invaded by the German army, and Britain declared war on Germany, King George VI asked Churchill to become Prime Minister. In his first speech he told the British people he had nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. Thanks to his courage and his military skill, as well as economic and military support from the United States, Britain and the allies defeated the Germans.
Churchill became a national hero, but after the war ended in 1945 he lost his job as Prime Minister when his party lost the general election. In 1951 he became Prime Minister again.He retired in 1955 and until he died on 24 January 1965 he continued travelling, writing and painting. He was given a state funeral, and over a million people watched his funeral procession as it passed through the streets of London.
