3.3 Membership of Trade Union
above 16 years of age and employed in trade, occupation or industry of the union
public sector same occupation, department or ministry
professional and managerial group cannot join unless they are exempted by the Chief Secretary to the government.
Certain groups of government servants are not allowed to join unions at all

Registration
A trade union must apply to the Director- General of Trade unions one-six month of the date established.

Public sector employees’ unions

Private sector employees’ unions (National @ In-house)
National Trade Union
cover all workers in the same industry, trade or occupation
do not cover workers throughout Malaysia
In-house Trade Union
members are all employed by the same employer
prefer their employees to be represented by inhouse unions
strength of a union is not measured by the number of its members
Disadvantages of In-house Unions
not enable it to carry out its normal trade union activities
Fear of victimization
possibility of the employer trying to exploit such leaders
small memberships unable to provide scholarships & other social benefits
membership is one particular company
Trade Union Disallows the Movements of In-house Unions
national union-will implement tactics such as sabotage
Does not cooperate-unorganized, incapable of handling disputes negotiations
inefficient & lack of leadership skills
Employers’ unions
main objectives to promote and protect the interests of their members, to negotiate and deal with trade unions of employees and to represent their members in any trade dispute
must apply to the Director-General of Trade Unions, and the members for same trade
Union funds
pay an entrance fee & a monthly subscription RM3.00 to RM8.00.
