What is it like?
No thinking required.
No learning required.
It happens naturally.
It does NOT have to be taught.

Emergent Bilinguals
What is it like?
Multi-language
Typically are smarter/more knowledgable than single language students.

Examples: A child enters school with the knowledge of another language that is not English.
Nonexamples:
A child who can only speak English, or only speak the language of instruction.
Communicative Competence

Examples:
A person offers a generous donation to your business so you thank them and say, "Bless you." You and the other person know the difference in that context vs. "Bless you" when you sneeze.
Nonexamples: A person doesn't hear what you said so they say, "I'm sorry...Can you repeat that?" You don't know the different contexts of the phrase "I'm sorry," so you reply with "Why are you sorry? You didn't do anything to hurt me."
Learning
Examples:
My students were taught how to multiply at the beginning of the school year. This skill was reinforced everyday for the remainder of the school year. The students mastered the concept of multiplication because they learned how to do it and then practiced it repeatedly.
Nonexamples:
breathing, blinking
What is it like? Learning vs. Acquisition
Students sitting in the classroom learning content such as History, Math, ELA, Science, etc. The students are having to be taught this content, it does not come natural.
What is it? The process that occurs in school when we consciously attend to information that is presented to us and attempt to master some subject.
Universal Grammar
What is it?
Children are born with the ability to understand the human voice and distinguish between parts of language.
What is it like?
Children can listen to the human voice and put things together in their head.
