Term 2 UOS 3: Sustainable architecture design
Driving question
Why is it important to develop in a sustainable way?
Learning objectives
It is important to develop structures to fit the purpose it is designed to serve. Sustainability should be kept at the hart of all developments to keep our environment safe to live in.
Sub- objectives:
Learners must make use of designing techniques to strengthen structures.
Why do we need to strengthen structures?
What should be considered when developing a sustainable solution?
When developing cities is it smarter to develop upwards or outwards.
Change of climate zones and how this impacts how we develop structures
Activities
Activity 1: Structural support (experiment)
Flipped class
Plan your model :
Your model should not be bigger than 30x30x30
Different views of your model.
Materials you will use.
Use RED to indicate your structural support you are adding to your model.
Class activity
Design and create a bridge
You should make use of struts, trusses and anchors to make your bridge stronger.
You may only use recycled materials.
After creating your model you are going to test how strong it is.
You should test and log how much weight it can support before showing signs of breaking.
You should make use of your design process to complete this task.
Activity 2: Upwards or outwards
Flipped class
Venn Diagram
Create two Venn diagrams.
The first should compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of developing a city upwards.
The second should compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of developing a city outwards.
Class activity
Comparative essay
Learners need to compare developing cities outward vs upward.
They should indicate what they see as more sustainable and support why they think so.
Activity 3: Sustainable design
Flipped class
Summarise the 17 sustainable development goals.
Create a tabel with the 17 goals with a name for the goal and a short description of this goal.
Class activity
Learners will be assigned to a specific biome in Minecraft.
Learners will develop a small sustainable community and incorporate as many of the sustainability goals as they can.
Learners will submit a book and quill presenting their project and indicate exactly what they have done to address the sustainability goals in their community.
Activity 4: Climate zones in Africa
Flipped class
After working trough set our work. Learners will complete a quiz assignment on the different climate zones we have in Africa.
Class activity
Learners will add the different climate zones in Africa on a template.
Learners must make use of a key to indicate the different climate zones on their map of Africa.
Learners will create a table indicating what a sustainable structure will be in the different climate zones.
Activity 5: Story
Flipped class
Mind Map
Learners will plan their powtoon summative activity.
Learners will plan different aspects of their powtoon.

*plot
Class activity
Learners will create a short cartoon concluding what they have learned in this unit of study.
Learners will make use of
Sound
Visuals
Motion
The story should show what we can do to develop in a sustainable way.
The video should not be longer than 3 minutes
