PHAGOCYTOSIS -
Process: Phagocytes engulf and destroy cells with foreign antigens. They identify foreign majors (antigens) and begin phagocytosis.
Cells Involved:
1. Neutrophil: are irregular shaped nuclei. Have a flexible plasma membrane. Last a few days.
2.Macrophage: larger cells. Fewer in number. Slower to act. Are capable of engulfing and digesting a larger range of infectious agents. Help clean up and remove damaged tissue. Last up to a month.
3.Dendritic cell: Antigen presenting cell (APC)
4.Eosinophils: Granulocyte -> secretes powerful enzymes that are capable of producing holes in pathogens.
5.Natural Killer Cells (NK): chemicals to induce cell death / lyse. A type of lymphocyte. Provide rapid responses to viral infected cells. Detect alters-self markers o cells. Secrete chemicals that lyse cancer and tumor cells. Initiate extrinsic Apoptotic pathway – programmed and kills them
Function: Different phagocytes have different roles within the immune system. However, they all aim to eliminate the any pathogens that enters the body.
