CHAPTER 8 LANDFILL
WASTE-LAND DISPOSAL
Dumping Site
-
Attenuation mechanisms: dilution and dispersion through pores and micro fissures into underlying saturated zones.
-
Containment sites
Wastes, leachate and gas are isolated from the surrounding environment.
The containment is achieved either by natural clay bottom liners or a combination of both and is expected to be 'leak free'
Facilities for leachate and gas collection and removal are installed and regular monitoring is possible
TYPES OF LANDFILL
-
-
-
Other Types of Landfill
Maximize Gas Production
deep, individual lined cells, waste is placed without intermediate layers of cover material and leachate is recycled to enhance AD
-
SANITARY LANDFILL
"A method of disposing solid waste on land without creating nuisance or hazard to public health or safety. Utilizing engineering principles to confine wastes to the smallest practical volume and cover it with a layer of earth at the conclusion of each day's operation or at such more frequent intervals as may be necessary."
LANDFILL IN MALAYSIA
-
A sanitary landfill is one that will deposit solid waste onto/into the land in such a manner that pollution to the environment is prevented as far as possible.
Leachate Management: internal basin drainage and treatment, external drainage and surface water management, landfill gas management, closure and restoration provisions.
-
LEVEL OF LANDFILL
LEVEL 1 Controlled tipping, Perimeter fence and drains
LEVEL 2 Gas removal system, designated area for unloading, separated working area, daily cover, enclosing bund, elimination of scavenging activities and environmental protection facilities.
LEVEL 3 Leachate recirculation system, leachate collection system, monitoring of landfill leachate.
