According to Buddhist stories, just before Siddhartha was born, Queen Maya had a dream of a white elephant that came down from heaven and entered the womb. The elephant told her that she would give birth to a holy child, and that when he was born he would achieve perfect wisdom.
Siddhartha was born in the Lumbini Gardens. The stories say that the Buddha could instantly walk and talk. He walked seven steps and with every step he took, lotus flowers sprang up beneath his feet. he then said:' no further rebirths have i endure for this is my last body. Now I shall destroy and pluck out by the roots by the sorrow that is caused by birth and death.'' The name Siddhartha means 'perfect fulfillment'.
Shortly after birth, a prophecy was made that he would either become a revered holy man or a great king. Siddhartha's mother died when he was just seven days old. He was raised by his mother's sister.
His father was determined that he would become a great king. He decided to give Siddhartha a life of complete luxury, away from any sufferings
Despite being spoilt, tradition says that he was a good and king person as he grew up.
