Student opposition
Introduction of national service concerned students.

Nyerere stated that students were privileged members of society and should see national service as an honour
If students opposed this, they would be imprisoned.
Students would serve in the armed forced before beginning civilian careers.

Tanganyika rifles mutinied.

Nyerere's concern was unrest of army, would cause lack of security and undermine his capability to control Tanganyika.
Another risk of ethnic-rivalry which Nyerere had tried to prevent (his dream of non-racially conscious state )

1965: Tanzania is formally declared a one-party state. TANU was the only recognised political party.
Nyerere pointed out that multi-party democracy was not the only form of legitimate democracy

TANU would accommodate all hopes, wishes and complaints
Nyerere merged private trade unions into NUTA and cooperative societies into the CUT

No one could campaign on the basis of race, tribe or religion and all candidates had to debate in Kiswahili
