Mahatma Gandhi
was the leader of the movement against British rule in India
He believed in non-violent protest
which though it was a powerful way to make changes
Was born in India in 1869
Went to London when he was 19
To study Law, and then he worked as a lawyer in South Africa
For 20 years
When he returned in India
he became a political activist
and led the movement for India's indipendece from the British Empire
On 30th January, 1948, he was assassinated
by a Hindu nationalist
The Salt March, 1930
it was one of Gandhi's most successful protests
The British put a tax on salt
So Gandhi walked three hundred kilometres to the sea to make his own salt
and thousands of people joined him
Martin Luther King
Became leader of the Civil Rights Movement
He was frequently arrested by the police
But he continued to protest

M.L. King spoke to the people about his dream for the future
Freedom and equality for all Americans
In 1964, he won the Nobel Prize for Peace
In 1965, the American government made it possible for all African Americans to vote
In 1968, he was assassinated
In Memphis, Tennessee, in April 1968
He believed in non-violent protest
and made campaigns against racial discrimination
