Aims of punishment
Reformation
This is the idea that punishment should include a concerted effort to change the criminals mindset and make them less likely to re-offend
Protection
Punishments are designed to protect society from criminals. This involves removing the threat from society in some way
Deterrence
Punishments are given to put people off committing the crime in the first place or putting someone off committing the crime again
Vindication
Punishments are given out to ensure that the law is respected. If there were no penalties, people would not respect the law and would break it. It is important to uphold the punishments for the sake of upholding respect of the law.
Retribution
A person should be punished because they deserve a punishment that is proportional to the crime they committed. It follows from our sense of justice that when someone commits a crime and ''harms'' someone or something, they simply deserve to be punished in a proportional way
Non- custodial sentences
Probation
Offenders are under supervision of a probation officer for a set period of time. They meet up regularly to discuss progress
Community service
Offenders have to carry out unpaid work that benefits their community in their own time for a set period of hours.
