Extraction of Iron - Coggle Diagram
Extraction of Iron
Blast Furnance
Link Title
Charge is placed thorugh a giant chimney
blast furnance is 30m tall
hot air is blasted through the bottom
Reaction in Blast Furnance
oxygen reacts with coke to give carbon dioxide: C + O2 = CO2
Carbon dioxide reacts wtih coke to produce carbon monoxide: CO2 + C = 2CO
Carbon Monoxide reduces the iron in the ore to give molten iron: 3CO + Fe2O3 = 2Fe + 3CO2
Limestone reacts with sand to form slag: CaO + SiO = CaSiO
Limestone breaks down to form carbon dioxide: CaCO3 = CO2 + CaO
Content in Charge
Iron Ore, Haematite: contains sand with iron oxide
Limestone
Coke
Industrial Usage of iron and slag
slag: mainly used to build roads
iron: poured into moulds to make railing/ storage tanks. Also used to make steel
