Topic 11: Ethics
-
1.11.1 Defining Morality
- Morality can be defined in terms of both means, or fairness of action (deontology) and ends-consequences (teleology)
- Moral actions are basically just and fair (fair does not mean equal, e.g. compensation)
- HR serves both the individual and the organization in a employment exchange (labor for rewards) agreement
- Inducements-contributions balance: balance achieved where the rewards (wages, salaries, benefits) offered are equivalent to the contributions (effort, skill, knowledge)
1.11.2 Ethical Issues
- Privacy in the workplace: Technology allows employers to monitor perfromance (e.g. audio and/or video recording). Some go against due to privacy violations. The ethical issue is how this information is used. This includes personenel testing and interviews
- Conflicts of interest: a situation where a person acts in personal benefit, at the expense of or detriment of the company. An effective way to address this is an NDA
- Ethics and technology: internet, electronic communications and mobiles, can lead to unethical behaviors. There have to be clear standards and policies
- Bribes, Payoffs, and Kickbacks: gifts are immoral when it amounts to extorsion or influence buying.
- Whistle blowing: consists of informing people outside the company about corporate misconduct
- Deceptive practices: occcurs often in advertising and commercials.
- Forms of organizational abuse: unintentional injury to EEs: it can happen in two ways, the org abusing individuals or vice-versa. This can happen intentionally, or unintentionally. Protecting EEs and helping them grow and achieve fulfillment is a basic ethical concern in HR Mgmt
