COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING
ORIGINS
In the 1960s the British questioned and applied changes to the Audiolingual Method since it's theory was rejected in the U.S, leading to what we know today as Communicative Language Teaching.
WHAT IS IT?
A method that helps to develop the procedures of teaching of the four language skills, it can be an integration of grammatical and functional teaching, it pays attention to structural and functional aspects of language. It also makes contrast to the Communicative Approach.
DIVISIONS
This method divides into 3 different parts, which will be told in the following parts:
DESIGN
1-Objectives: an affective level of interpersonal relationships and conduct, level of individual learning needs.
2-Syllabus: description of the objectives of FL courses
3-Types of learning and teaching activities: Functional Communication Activities and Social Interaction Activities.
4-Learners Role: It's a negotiator between the learning process and the process of communication.
5-Teachers Role: to facilitate the communication process between students and the activities and texts.
6-The Role of Instructional Materials: to support communicative approaches to language teaching.
PROCEDURE
Presentation of a brief dialog or several mini-dialogs, preceded by a motivation and a discussion of the function and situation
Questions and answers based on the dialog topic
Questions and answers related to the students’ personal experiences but centered around the dialog theme.
Oral production activities.
Sampling of the written homework assignment.
Evaluation of learning
APPROACH
1- Language is a system for the expresión of meaning.
2-The primary function is to allow interaction and communication.
3- The structure reflects its functional and communicative uses.
4- The primary units are not merely grammatical and structural features, but categories of functional and communicative
