Ethics helps you become good
Do ethics benefit you? p. 5-16
Many famous people have mentioned that seeking to do good does not benefit you in the world.
Charlie brown even shows that cheating can always make you hit a bullseye.
Ted Williams told the Red Sox his contract had a mistake in it, when he could have been paid 1/3 more. He raised his bating average that season and did something great for his team.
Williams did what he did because he was exercising self-control when outside circumstances pressuring him to do something different.
What you have the right to do and what is the right thing to do. Don’t do something just because you can, do it because it is what you know to be right. Stay true to your conscious.
Compartmentalization p. 17-24
Over compartmentalization is the sense that ethics is not tied into every part of life, which is erroneous.
Do not have a private self and a public self. Both should coincide.
“Would we be willing to give our pet parrot to the town gossip.”
Obligations p. 25-30
How serious do we take agreements we’ve made? Do what you’ve agreed to do.
This is an excellent measure of our ethics and morals.
Our obligations to institutions or organizations are important. This includes our country. Taxes are a fault of people to do their duty to their country.
BYU’s honor code is a standard of ethics and morals. Keep the deals we’ve made with our University.
Really, it is important because we made a commitment. “That’s what we mean by honor. That’s what we mean by integrity.”
BYU alumni who was honest. He had never been billed the 32$ for tuition. He had a moral obligation to pay it to the University. He paid it completely.
