- 14 europeans came together in Berlin and decided how to divide Africa peacefully
- Africa wasn't even invited to this meeting
- Any European could claim any land in Africa

Consequences
The scramble for Africa led to famines, wars, and many deaths
Congo vs Belgium: Belgium colonized Congo and forced the native people of Congo to work rough, long hours in rubber plantations, resulting in 10 million people dying.
South Africa Vs Britain: Zulu War, the Zulu king (Shaka) of the tribe fought a gorey and rough war against the British during the 1870s - 1880s. Boer War, the Dutch, British, and Afrikaans people fought during the 1890s and resulting in 50,000 killed.

Social Darwinism
A theory about Charles Darwin's idea about evolution and survival of the fittest were applies to human society. Those fittest to survive enjoyed wealth and success
Colony - a country governed internally by foreign power.
Example: Somaliland was a French colony
Protectorate - A country with its own internal government, under the control by an outside power
Example: Britain established a protectorate over the Niger river delta
Sphere of influence - an area in which outside power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges
Example: Liberia was under the sphere of influence by the USA
Economic imperialism - A country controlled by a private business.
Example: The dole fruit company controlled pineapple trade in Hawaii
