Nigeria
Britain gained control of southern Nigeria through diplomatic and military means. Some local rulers agreed and signed treaties with the British. The people who were against British colonization rebelled but this was put down by British force.
In 1914, British took over the entirety of Nigeria. Northern Nigeria was conquered by the Royal Niger Company. The company gained control of palm oil trade over the Delta river after the Berlin conference established British Protectorate in the area.
Forms of Imperialism

Protectorate: Britain established a protectorate over the Nigerian river Delta - This area had their own government but was controlled by the British.
Sphere of Influence: Liberia was under the sphere of influence of the US - they could only trade with the US and no other countries.
Economic imperialism: Dole fruit company controlled pineapple trade in Hawaii - the company controlled Hawaii’s business.
- Many new countries were being created because European countries wanted their hands on any type of land they could find, this caused people to be separated from their rural lands and triable groups and religions.
- The African political institutions and legal rights were completely replaced by colonial structures. The new system enforced the provision of natural resources, this effected the environment harshly
- Africans lost control of their land and their independence. Many died of new diseases such as smallpox.
- Men were forced to leave villages to find
ways to support themselves and their families.
- Famines resulted from the change to cash crops in place of subsistence agriculture.
