Key People
David Livingstone: a missionary, who travelled with a group of Africans deep into centeral to promote Christianity.
Henry Stanley: He was sent to go find Livingstone, as people feared he passed away. Henry decided to explore Africa himself and trace the Congo River. He sparked King Leopard the second of Belgium with his explorations. Stanley then helped the king to obtain land in Congo.
King Leopard the second; He was the king of Belgium, and had colonized lands in Congo.
Shaka: He was the chief of Zulu. He used his strength and unique methods of fighting, to fight back the Europeans.
Menelik the Second: He became the emperor of Ethiopia in 1889. He played Italians, British and French against one another, which prevented them from colonizing Ethiopia. He build a large arsenal of weapons, and successfully fought these European countries. He declared war, 'the battle of Adowa', to defeat Italians and they successfully kept their nation independent.
Theory
Social Darwanism: It was a theory by Charles Darwin, whereby they thought the idea of "survival of the fittest", wasn't just applied to animals, but humans as well. They thought that humans who were fittest for survival enjoyed wealth and success and were considered superior.
Weapon
The Maxim gun: The world's first automatic machine gun, and was used b the Europeans to fight Africa in order to colonize.
