Functions
The ability to withstand high temperatures and confine heat within a limited area such as a furnace.
To maintain sufficient dimensional stability at elevated temperatures and after/during repeated thermal cycling.

- Non-oxide refractory are technical ceramics that are classed as inorganic, non-metallic materials. They exhibit covalent bonds, can be conductive (carbides) and non-conductive (nitrides) and usually contain boron, silicon or aluminium.
Properties:
- high melting point
- good chemical resistance
- hard & wear-resistance
- high electrical & thermal comductivity
- non volatile
- high melting point
-
- high melting point
- wear resistance
- high degree of stability
-
-
- exhibit relatively high toughness and flexural strength
- used for cutting and milling ceramics, in exhaust gas turbochargers and as protective pipes for thermal elements.
- nuclear reactors and turbine blades
- Used as electrodes in high temperature electrolysis
- high porosity
- reduce temperature and corrosion-resistance
- used as abrasive grinding grains (carborundum), as mechanical seals, rotors in exhaust gas turbines and heat exchangers in corrosive environments.
