Imperialism
Europeans believed in the superiority of the white race, and their culture. they thought they were duty bound to share their great culture which is called the white mans burden.
Social Darwinism: more advanced nations thought that they could apply the strong eat the weak analogy towards nature to conquering other nations.

Nationalism: after Britain lost it's american colonies they began searching around the world to spread their rule. France didn't want to be outdone by them so they also did.
Economic: as the industrial rev. flourished those empires need raw materials and most importantly more people to sell them to. that when the countries established trading posts on other countries
State expansion
Africa: British wanted a shorter sea based route to Asian trading posts and wanted their materials
France put settler people in Algeria
Scramble for Africa: As more and more countries starting to claim African territories, competition for claiming it, they called for the Berlin conference to divide Africa peacefully.

China was unstable so European powers demanded trading routes with china, and divided china into spheres of influence
Japan after the Meiji restoration they started to conquer people with rich materials including Korea.
Australia was conquered by Britain and used as a penal colony sending convicts. bu then later sent people to settle on it
Westward expansion, trail of tears. then had the Spanish american war, and ended up winning gaining the Philippines Guam Puerto Rico and Cuba

British go to India to get in on the spice trade, then forced them to produce cotton

British wanted to trade with China for their silk and porcelain, but the Chinese didn't want anything of theirs so trade was one sided. Britain decided to sell opium to them to get them addicted and fix trade deficit.
opium then caused opium wars, Britain won and controlled china economically forcing then to open more trading post with Britain.
