In the story Children of the Bedtime Machine, the woman in the story is the protagonist. We follow her through her life in the broken world she lives in. We see her character change and evolve from the beginning of the story to the end. During the beginning, she is lonely, isolated, and sad because she lost her only family members in the world. Because of this, she sees everything as broken. Every few days she goes to the store to communicate with others and trade fresh goods for canned food. Seeing these people brightened up her day. Eventually, a man convinced her to take the bedtime machine home. As she brought it home, she felt a fool as she actually believed it would work. Later, the machine does end up working. At first, the little boy in the machine frightens her, but she soon realizes that the boy was the best thing to ever happen to her. She is reminded of her soon. Soon, thousands of children show up in the machine to hear the wonderful stories she has been telling. She felt joy, happiness, and peace, but mostly she wasn't lonely anymore. She had the big family she dreamed for as a kid. Her life turned around and she found purpose in living. Her perception of the world changed and she lived every moment to its fullest.
