        The obvious next place to attack was Germany and both the allies and Hitler were aware of this.

        After Germany's failed attack at the battle of the bulge the Germans were trapped with 9 million troops marching toward Berlin Hitler went to his underground bunker and committed suicide as Berlin crumbled.
      - They set up a fake army near Calais to make Hitler think the invasion would be there.
- - - - To stop the allies from continuing their island hopping toward Japan they planned a large attack to destroy the american fleet and stop the resupply to their troops.
        
        The plan failed spectacularly and Japan's fleet was destroyed
      - this allowed the US to continue island hopping closer to Japan
        
        In early 1945, the US reached Iwo Jima an island within a thousand miles of Tokyo.
        
        Iwo Jima was a difficult island to take over and the allies suffered heavy casualties.
        
        A month after they had reached an island 350 miles from the mainland of Japan.
        
        At Okinawa, the Japanese suffered nearly 10 times as many casualties as the US.
        
        The next step was to take over Japan but it was likely to cost many lives that didn't need to be lost.
