- - - - Etiology = Risk factors include exposure to UV light, genetic factors, long-term immunosuppression, and arsenic ingestion; 20-50 years from UV light to symptoms of BCC is typical
      - Method of Transmission = genetic predisposition; may be transmitted to offspring
      - EO Characteristics = 85% are found in head and neck with most on the face; papular growth with a sessile base; as tumor becomes more severe, central area of the nodule becomes depressed and ulcerated and may become crusted; borders of the lesion are raised and exhibit a pearly appearance, with a network of small capillaries visible on the surface; painless lesions
      - PO and IO Characteristics = rarely appears IO; may appear on the lips or vermilion border
      - Distinguishing Characteristics = raised pearly borders with a visible capillary network surrounding a central depressed, crusted area
      - Dental Implications = refer to Pt to physician when their is a lesion with the characteristics of BCC
      - Treatment and Prognosis = surgical excision, laser surgery, cryosurgery, electrodesiccation, and radiation therapy; 5 year survival rate for localized BCC is over 99%; median survival time for metastatic BCC is 8 months; monitored for new lesions on an annual basis for life
    - - Etiology =risk factors include UV light, arsenic ingestion, radiation therapy, areas that were previously burned, genetics, and skin diseases or injuries that cause scarring
      - Method of Transmission = associated with HPV occurs only after infection with the virus, otherwise it is not transmissible
      - EO Characteristics = usually develops in a preexisting actinic keratosis; painless, nonhealing, rough, erythematic, scaly papule that may cause pruritus and itching; ulcerated surface becomes crusted and bleeds easily; surrounding tissues are usually erythematic and inflamed
      - PO and IO Characteristics = PO lesions of the lip and surrounding area with same characteristics as above
      - Distinguishing Characteristics = any nonhealing lesion should be biopsied and identified due to other possibilities being similar to SCC
      - Dental Implications = painless, nonhealing ulcers should be suspected as SCC and should be biopsied
      - Treatment and Prognosis = surgical excision, laser surgery, cryosurgery, electrodesiccation, radiation therapy, and PDT; 5 year survival rate is over 90%; if tumor metastasizes, the 5 yer survival rate drops to 25-45%; monitor for new lesions on a yearly basis
