Pathophysiology
The appendix is a pouch located in the cecum. Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix. Inflammation can occur when the opening of the appendix is blocked by feces, tumors, a parasite, or an indigestible substances. The tissues becomes infected by bacteria in the digestive tract. Pus accumulates, blood supply is impaired, and the appendix may rupture. This may allow digestive contents to enter the abdominal cavity causing peritonitis.
