Captain Cook
In 1769, The Royal Society gave Cook the task of exploring the south seas
His instructions were to treat the people as humans, equals, and he came with an open mind and a respectful attitude
Persuaded Tahitian Priest, Tupaea, to come with him, and he served as a translator/interpreter for Cook, because his language was similar
Events
Made landfall in many places around coast, mostly peaceful interactions
Cook believed that all the violent interactions were by the fault of the europeans, rather than the Maori

His ship, the Endeavour arrived in NZ in 1769
When he left, he sailed across to Australia and landed in a place he named Botany Bay

By now, the land was called New Zealand by the Europeans
Came to NZ three times, 1769, 1773, and 1777

A criminal Solution
1778, Britain have a problem of where to send their convicts after US became independent

Decided to look at Botany Bay as an option, and in 1788, ships full of 1400 people, mostly convicts, landed in Botany Bay
Came to a harbour just up the coast and decided to set up thee instead, called the bay Port Jackson
Port Jackson became colony, and for next 150 years, many convicts would be transported there, and it was commonly referred to as Botany Bay, although being further up the coast
Australia was consider Terra Nullius, which meant that it belonged to no one
Whalers and Sealers
After cooks visits, south seas became a destination for people in search of whales and seals
Whales
Whales were slaughtered by the thousands, and their carcasses were dragged ashore and their blubber was boiled down into oil
