Phase Diagram
- shows transformation of phases under equilibrium or slow cooling
-Microstructure may change depending on cooling rate during solidification – the phases present, portion of each phase, size / morphology of each phases
map of phases transformed under equilibrium cooling (slow cooling). This used to predict microstructure -phases, compound that could formed
Heat Treatment
- A combination of heating & cooling operations, timed & applied to a metal or alloy in solid state in a way that will produced desired properties
- Most treatment begin by heating into austenite phase and cooled continuously to room temperature
-
Spheroidizing – to improve machinability, produce coarse spheroidal or globular cementite particles in ferritic matrix
-
Tempering - Usually done for C higher thn 0.4% to reduce residual stress and give a bit ductility & toughnes to steel

3 types of annealing
Full annealing – heated to austenization T, thus phase transformation occurs . Gain highest ductility
Process anneal – does not austenize, heating only to recrystallize and remove dislocation entanglement. NO phase change, but change of grain morphology.Gain sufficient ductility to continue deformation
Stress relief anneal- No change of microstructure. Heating only to relieve some of the entangled dislocation and regain some ductility
