Socialization of the Family

We learn to be human through socialization

Socialization takes place through positive & negative reinforcement/sanctions by parents, friends, & society.

We socialize according to classes. We can be higher class, middle-class and working-class , and lower and underclass. Families socialize/rear their children differently. Some parents are influenced by the type of freedom on a job.

A neighborhood can affect a child's behavior.
Studies have shown residents of more affluent neighborhoods keep and eye on the kids than those of poor neighborhoods

Socialization groups us into different types of families, namely
:
1. Nuclear family*- A family consisting of a husband and wife and their children


2. Family of Orientation-the family into which one is born

3. Family of procreation- family that develops when one marries and has children.


4.Matriarchal Family- mother or mother's side of the family has formal authority and dominance.

    father or father's side of the family has formal authority and dominance

  2. Binuclear family**


    family pattern in which children are part of two homes and two family groups

As the divorce rate has risen, so has the frequency of
remarriage.

Children's reactions to divorce depends on
the various personalities involved, their coping skills, and the parents' relations with their children, as well as with each other.

social class, rank, or position determined by education, occupation, income and/or place of residence.


Traditional societies
society that relies on customs handed down from past generations as ways to behave

Parental divorce a single event because it represents a series of stressful experiences for the entire family.
