Differences
Geographically they are in very different locations
Japan is in east Asia and is made up of many different island
Europe is located on the top half of the northern hemisphere and is made up of many different coutries
Although being around at similar times they did go on for different lengths
In Europe it lasted around 1000 years
It lasted around 700 years Japan
Some of their higher positions were received in different ways
In medieval Europe positions like lordships were won through money and loyalty to the king
In Japan positions like daimyo and shogun can be won by military prowess and loyalty
As mentioned on the similarities side they had different groups of people at the bottom of society
Europe had peasants at the bottom of the pyramid due to lack of money
Japan had merchants at the bottom of the social pyramid due to there lack of skill and money.
They had different most practised religions
The most practised religion in Europe was Christianity
The most practised religions in Japan were Buddhism, Shinto and Shugendo
The person at the top of the social pyramid had very different roles
The Japanese Emperor was more of a religious figurehead with very little power of the people.
The European King was the highest power and held the most say and rule of the people.
Similarities
Both use social system with defined classes that can be described as pyramid societies
Europe had 4 main classes
Japan had eight main classes
Both have a group a well trained and possibly paid warriors
Europe had knights or soldiers
Japan Had samurais
Both have on main person at the top of the social pyramid
Europe has King ( The king had the deciding rule)
Japan ha the Emperor (It is important to note that the emperor had very little political power)
Both society had a class of peasants that made up most of the population.
The European ones were at the bottom of the social pyramid
The Japanese ones were third lowest and were considered very valuable because the made food (Even more valuable then Merchants and artisans
Both used feudalism. The system were land is traded for service
Both existed at around the same time period
It was extremely hard to move up through society in Medieval Europe but if came in possession of a large amount of money or the was a mass need for your skill you could possibly move. Another way to move up through classes, if you were a woman, was to marry rich.
In Japan you could move up through classes by marriage, if they were a high supply for you skill or by military victory.
