Farming
The Earlier Nomadic Pastoralist ways of the Maasai People limited their farming techniques to cattle grazing and locating new pastures for their cattle to feed. However, with droughts becoming more frequent and the population increasing, the Maasai began cultivating land in the 1990s. In Irrigated Farmlands, the Maasai grow crops like beans (December to February), maize (March to July) and tomato (August to November.
Unfortunately, poor farming practices have put the Mara river at risk from over-abstraction and has exposed the soil. The steep farms allow the exposed soil to enter the rivers during rainfall which chokes the aquatic species. The exposed soil causes problems for the people and animals drinking the water downstream.
Furthermore, earlier methods of cattle grazing led to overgrazing, this destroyed grassland for wildlife.
