characteristics of childminders
love children and dedicated to their job
ability to promote a child's learning and development by providing activities and learning experiences suitable for the child's age.

Factors to consider when choosing childcare.
Price: income level will determine the amount of money available to spend on childcare. childminders tend to be the most cost-effective form of childcare.
Environment: parents need to consider whether they would prefer to keep their child within the home environment with a childminder or seek childcare outside the home.
Age and needs of the child: due to their young age, babies have more physical, emotional and social requirements than toddlers, so parents need to consider this when choosing childcare.
Convenience: childcare needs to be convenient in terms of working hours and proximity to home or work. Childminders are often the most convenient form of childcare.
Experiences and qualifications: parents should obtain references and investigate experience and qualifications of childcare workers. Where possible they should opt for childcare services that are accredited e.g. Montessori schools are accredited by the Irish Montessori Education Board (IMEB)

provide a hygienic and safe environment to keep children away from danger and illness.
be easily accessible for parents and children, but still safe and secure so that children are safe.
be self contained, with sleeping areas, nappy changing facilities, play areas and food preparation areas.
Disadvantages of childminders:

Advantages of childminders:
1)can be less expensive than most forms of childcare.
2) can give more one to one time and individual attention to the child.
3) Can be more flexible about pick-up and drop-off times if parents works schedules change.

reliable option as opening hours and days of operation are known in advance.
offer a stimulating environment with a variety of resources.
disadv of day care centre:
large groups of children reduces one on one time.
tends to be an expensive form of childcare
operate strict opening hours, not suitable for parents who get delayed at work.

Childminder, day care centres, Montessori school, playgroups/playschool and Naíonraí.
After school groups: these are offered in community based or privately-run childcare facilities that look after primary school children until their parents finish work.
