Cultural Inspirations towards Malaysian Animation Character Design
Research Problem
Upin Ipin is one of the latest Malaysian animation that reflects local culture in terms of lifestyle and background environment. students lack the sense of local identity through their final animation project. Makes Malaysian animation industry cloudy with the local character identity, plus can’t even be compared with a successful Western and Japan animations.
Research Objective
To investigate the cultural influences on costume designed for animation characters among the art and design students.
How they analysed the result
Content Analysis - use to analyse art and design student’s artwork from University Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Sarawak.The requirement for the analysis is that the artwork must be finished,completed in color and approved by lecturer.The criteria detail to analyse on character costume design is accessories,weapon, material ethnic and others.
APPROACH USED
Technological advances
Due to the rapid technological advances in the field of animation itself, many high quality 3d animations can be produced compared to 2d animations. This makes the animation look more real and interesting to watch especially for the character himself.
Costume in animation
Costumes play an important role in the design of characters in animation. Costumes can influence many factors including personality, the culture you want to highlight and the character to be brought into the animation. The costume also includes additional weapons and accessories.
Culture implication
The cultural implication in the design of animated characters can also have a huge impact especially in introducing a race or ethnicity. It also provides the audience with additional information and knowledge about the race or ethnicity.
RESULT
In conclusion, the study found that there are many positive factors that can be attributed to the inclusion of cultural elements in the production of animated character designs. This has been proven by several figures such as Panuti Beast, Art Van Zoest and many others who have shown that this can be a turning point in the development of a culture and society itself.
