major functions
digestive system: digestion & absorption of nutrients, elimination of waste
urinary system: regulate blood volume and blood pressure, regulate blood pH, elimination waste
major organs; digestive
esophagus: the conduit for food and water to enter the stomach
stomach: secrete acids and enzymes that break down & digest food
small intestine: absorption of nutrients and mineral from food (90% of nutrients)
large intestine: recovery of water and electrolytes, formation of feces
liver: production of bile, storing of the extra glucose
gallbladder: store and concentrate bile produced by the liver
major organs: urinary
kidneys: filter blood, balance electrolyte levels, control blood pressure
ureters: carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder
bladder: stores urine
urethra: carries urine from the bladder to outside of the body
digestive enzymes
amylase: break down starch molecules into sugar
pepsin: breaks down proteins into amino acids
pancreatic lipase: breaks down fats
layers of the GI tract
mucosa: responsible for absorption
submucosa: connective tissue with large blood supply
muscular: smooth muscle; makes peristaltic movement movement possible
serosa: superficial protective layers
renal corpuscle
glomerulus: capillaries of fenestrated endothelium; porous; allows for efficient filtrate formation
glomerular capsule: cup-shaped, hollow structures that surround glomerulus
renal tubule
nephron loop: conducts urine within nephrons; desnding + ascending limbs
distal convoluted tubule: farthest from renal corpuscle, drains into collecting duct; few microvilli
disorders of the digestive/urinary systems
gastroesophageal (GERD) reflex disease: can cause heart burn; caused by a slow emptying of stomach into intestines.
gastritis: inflammation of the lining of the stomach
UTI: caused by the presence of bacteria in urine
pyelonephritis: inflammation of the kidney
cystitis: inflammation of the bladder
