VERTEBRATE ANIMALS
**
All vertebrates have an internal skeleton made up of bones. The skeleton includes a
backbone
.
A backbone consists of ring-like bones called
vertebrae
Vertebrates can be classified in 5 different groups
BIRDS
Birds have feathers
Birds are
oviparous(born from an egg)
BIrds breath air with their lungs
Birds don´t have teeth. They eat with their beaks
Most birds can fly but a few cannot. Penguins cannot fly and use their wings to swim.
Some birds live on land and in the wáter. They have webbed feet to help them swim. For example ducks.
FISH
Fish are aquatic animals that cannot live outside water
They are covered with scales
They breathe air through their gills
Fish are oviparous animals
Baby fish, called fry, can swim as soon as they hatch from the egg.
Mammals
Mammals are viviparous(the baby developes inside the mother´s womb) and Young mammals drink their mother´s milk
All mammals breathe air with their lungs
Most mammals have hair or fur on their bodies
Most mammals have four legs
There are different kinds of mammals. Most of them live on land, some live in water(aquatic mammals) and a few such as the bat can fly
REPTILES
Their skin is covered with scales
they breathe with their lungs
Most reptiles have four legs but snakes don´t have legs
Most reptiles are terrestrial(live on land) but some are aquatic, for example marine turtles.
**AMPHIBIANS
Adult amphibians breath through their lungs and their skin. For example frogs
Amphibians have a bare skin
Tadpoles are baby amphibians that live in water and breath through gills
Amphibians are oviparous
Most amphibians have four legs and some also have a tail
