Pathophysiology
Small bowel obstruction leads to proximal dilation of the intestine. Bowel dilation secretes cell secretory activity, causing more fluid accumulation. This would lead to increased peristalsis above or below the obstruction with frequent loose stools and flatus. Increasing small bowel distention leads to intraluminal pressure. Increased hydrostatic passage causes third spacing and movement of electrolytes and fluids and proteins.
