Modern poetry
The Georgian poets
They were still influenced by the Victorian Romantic tradition and they were against the revolution introduced by the Symbolists
Symbolism
It started in France with Baudelaire. Main features: the use of images to evoke, the importance of the sounds of words, the use of quotations from other literatures.
Imagism
It flourished between 1912-1914. Main features: free choice of any subject matter, use of precise and clear images, the aim of the poetry was to achieve discipline and precision
The War poets
They were unconventional, they dealt with the horrors of the war and used a violent, everyday language
The New Romantics
They appealed to emotions and rediscovered themes such as love, birth, death and even sex.

The modern novel
During the 20th century the structure of the novel changed: the shift was caused by a gradual transformation of British society
Two factors contributed to produce the modern novel: the new concept of time and the new theory of the unconscious given by Freud.
Time was subjective and internal: there was no distinction between past, present and future

Three groups of novelists: psychological novelists who focused on the development of the character's mind, the novelists who explored the mind of one or more characters and giving voice to they thoughts (Joyce, Woolf) and the writers who focused on the society around them.
The interior monologue
The indirect interior monologue: the narrator never lets the character's thoughts flow without control, and maintains logical and grammatical organization.
The direct interior monologue: that with two levels of narration - one external to the character's mind, and the other internal - and the one with and only the mind level narration
