EBB316 Corrosion and Degradation Assignment 1
iii) Methods can be performed to analyse the corrosion
1) Visual inspection
This visual inspection are conducted by using our naked eyes to observe the outer state of the cat cage. We can determine whether it is corroded or not by observing its colour changes which are usually orange if it is already corroded. The observed sample would also be very dry as well.
2) Salt Spray Test
This is basically an accelerated corrosion test that is used to measure materials resistance to corrosion while being exposed to a salt spray at high temperature. Therefore, information regarding the corrosion resistance of metals can be obtained.
i) The following is the images of the corrosion of my cat cage
ii) Type of corrosion of the cat cage
Uniform corrosion
This is an even and consistent attack on the surface of the sample which shorten the usability of the cat cage.
iv) The mechanism of the corrosion (uniform corrosion)
First of all, corrosion is the formation of a compound on the surface of metals when exposed to water or moisture. Salt also plays a major role in the process. My cat cage is made of metal so it is susceptible to corrosion.
With the presence of water, oxidation reaction will take place on the surface of metal to elute it as an ion or anode while reduction takes place on low energy area or cathode. In the case of my cat cage, the oxidation and reduction on its surface are in equal rates therefore corrosion occurs.
Solutions that can be used to prevent/reduce the corrosion of the cat cage
Consistent cleaning
Cleaning my cat cage consistently every once in a while can prevent corrosion. Using old cloths and clean brushes are enough.
Using a stainless steel cage
By investing in a better quality cat cage, it will reduce the chances of it to be corroded especially if it is stainless steel. Thus, the cat cage will be usable for a longer lifespan.
Establishing a physical barrier
Coating the metal surface of the cat cage with paint or enamel will provide a barrier between the metal and the moisture of the environment. Thus, removing the opportunity for both oxygen and moisture to come in contact with the metal.
Sacrificial coatings
I can coat the metal surface of my cat cage using another metal that is more likely to corrode. The most commonly used metal as sacrificial coating is zinc, in a process known as galvanizing.
