  • For children who may benefit form extrusion, use more than five.
  • Use tweezers to grab pom poms for extra fine motors skills.
  • Students will be able to create a caterpillar using pom poms.
  • Students will be able to use subtraction and addition to create a new caterpillar.

Create: Students will design a caterpillar with pom poms.

  1. Show the class the book “Ten Little Caterpillars”, by Bill Martin Jr.
  1. Ask what is the front cover, back cover, spine and tittle page of the book are.
  1. Tell students to pay attention to what happens to the caterpillars. Read the story.
  1. Hand out trays and pom poms.
  1. Have a student give you a number between 1 and 10. They will use the number in the subtraction problem.
  1. Have the student give you another number. They will use that to to subtract the pom poms to make a new caterpillar.
  1. Continue to make different caterpillars with different numbers. (1-10)
  1. Repeat the subtraction caterpillars until there is one pom pom is left.
  • Students create a caterpillar using the number of pom poms they chose.
  • Student can take away a number of pom poms to create a new caterpillar.
