Healthy couple in 40's Contraceptive advice
Anatomy of Male & Female Reproductive System (Gonads)
Male:
System of Ducts:Transport and Store Sperm, assist in maturation of sperm
Accessory sex Glands: Secrete most of liquid portion of Sperm
Testes: Produce Sperm & Secrete hormones
Supporting Structures including Penis, prostate gland and Urethra ( pathway for ejaculation of semen and excretion of urine
Epididymis
Ductus Deferens
Scrotum
Female:
Ovaries: Produce secondary oocytes and hormones (Progesterone& Estrogen)
Fallopian Tubes: Sites where fertilization occurs, transport secondary oocyte to uterus
Uterus: Site of implantation of a fertilized ovum, development of fetus during pregnancy, and labor
Cervix
Vagina: Pathway of Childbirth and menstrual flow
Event Ovarian Cycle
From puberty to menopause
Hypothalamus release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)
This stimulates release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH)
Follicular
Days 1–13 of 28-day ovarian cycle
follicles stimulated to mature by LH and FSH
Oocyte forced to one side of follicle
LH surge induce ovulation
Ovulation
Release of secondary oocyte from mature follicle
Occurs on day 14 of 28-day cycle
Expands until ovarian surface thins
Eventually ruptures, expelling secondary oocyte
Luteal
Remaining follicle cells become corpus luteum
Occurs on days 15—28 of cycle
Secretes progesterone and estrogen
prepares for fertilized oocyte
Causes drop in secreted progesterone and estrogen
Causes shedding of uterine lining, menstruation
Sheds lining, menses
Event Of Urine Cycle
Uterine cycle: cyclical changes in endometrial lining: Stimulated by estrogen and progesterone 28 days cycle
Menstrual phase: Days 1-5 Cycle; Last through period of menstrual bleeding
Proliferative phase Days 6-14 of cycle: Development of new functional layer of endometrium: LH Surge induce ovulation
Secretory phase: Days 15-28 days
Increased progesterone secretion from corpus luteum
Contraceptive methods
IUD:Flexible plastic structures inserted into uterus Copper or synthetic progesterone to help prevent implantation
Side Effects: Cramps, Spotting
Tubal ligation: Surgically cutting uterine tubes and tying off prevents sperm from reaching uterus Side effects may be heavy periods, headaches, weight gain
Vasectomy: Ductus Deferens cut and tied: Sperm unable to leave testes
Abstinence
Rhythm method
Withdrawal method
Barrier method
Condoms, spermicidal gels, diaphragms
Health
Vasectomy: Safe for men and he's getting older so will be better
Tubal Ligation: Permanent Birth Control less long term effects
IUD: Less effects on body compared to pill
Age
