Discretion
Duty to enforce the law
Duty to uphold consitution
We are public servants
Punishment:
Hard and unfavorable, but a must.
Deterrence
Proactive function that keeps individuals away from starting a life of crime.
Rehabilitation
Retrain individuals to become law-abiding citizens
Retribution
Make individuals pay back for the damage
Incapacitation
Take individuals freedom away
Common in ALL professions

Deontological
We have an innate motivation to do what is right.
Focuses on motive not action
Cause & Effect
Teleological
Things that produce pleasure or favorable outcomes are morally superior
Focuses on consequences not motive
actions are ethically superior if others in society would do likewise
Utilitarianism
: are the actions useful for the majority?
Code of Conduct
Spells out basic and common rules of behavior
Not influenced by others lack
