Population and the Environment
Plight of Natural Resources
Complex relationship between population growth and environment
Ecology
Biologist Ernst Haeckle coined the term
From the Greek word oikos meaning household
The science of the household & economics refers to its laws, in which the household symbolizes nature or a portion of nature
Ecosystem
An Environment
Niches has specific functions & is reserved for certain occupants & their activities
in a well functioning ecosystem all parts and occupants exist in a harmonious balance
Freshwater
Human Settlements were founded where freshwater was available
In cities in the Middle East many of them used technological solutions to overcome the scarcity
the absolute main source is of freshwater on earth is through precipitation
But because runoffs are common with rainwater it is possible that sometimes fertilizers and pesticides get into the water and can make it toxic
Depletion of Forests
Deforestation has been defined in many ways
Consequences
a decrease in Biodiversity
With the removal of trees it results in destruction of habitats
This may cause a species to become extinct or endangered, because they are unable to adapt to their new environment
A direct cause of deforestation is population pressure
as the population increases the demand for shelter and inexpensive energy sources increases
This eventuates the elimination of large tracts of trees and therefore cutting down the entire forest
Energy
The capacity to do work
Main source of energy for humans and animals are the carbon compounds and trace minerals in food
Consumption of energy resources such as oil and coal produces several undesirable chemical byproducts.
For example, Nitric oxide, and sulfur dioxide
Energy needs have wide varieties
gas for cooking and heating
Commercial energy for mass production of industrial goods
Energy for transportation
