Should zoo's and aquariums exist?
Hook
In the 4th century BCE, 'zoos' existed in most Greek city-states; even Alexander the Great is known to have sent animals that he found on his military expeditions back to Greece
Did you know that many of the initial zoos focused on showing the most unusual creatures possible?
Did you know that the oldest aquarium in the world is the Sea Life Brighton, which was made in 1872?
Specialized Information
Because of small cages more infant deaths occur; for example, polar bears had an infant mortality rate of 65% due to small enclosures
Animal behaviorists often see animals at the zoo who are suffering from problems not seen in the wild, like clinical depression, gibbons, OCD, and anxiety.
Because of the documentary Blackfish, California outlawed captive orca breeding; the documentary showed the psychological damage done to orcas by SeaWorld
Main argument #3: Legal and financial
Money
What the zoos spend money on
Marketing
What they do for money
Some zoos can start focusing on breeding for the babies
Relations between countries
Ex. The pandas from China
Laws
Laws are different in every country
Main argument #2: Affects on animals
Physical damage
Why they're affected
Psychological damage
Social
Some animals travel in herds but aren't able too because they're in zoos
Main argument #1: Animal Rights
Interactive programs
As in 'what gives us the right to pet/ swim with the animals?'
Making them perform tricks
Captivity
Captivity vs. extinction
Families can be torn apart
History and Background
There is evidence in Egyptian and Mesopotamian wall carvings that rulers and aristocrats created menageries.
The modern, public zoo became popular in the 18th century. The first modern zoo, built in 1793, opened in Paris, France
The first zoos were created as private collections by the wealthy to show their power, but back then, the collections were called menageries.
Some well-known animals were king Solomon, queen Semiramis, king Nebuchadnezzar, and king Ashurbanipal
Some Roman emperors had private collections of animals for study or for the arena. Most people didn't really use the animals for study though.
The first public aquarium was in London Zoo in May 1853, it was called Fish House
There are over five thousand creatures including Rays, Sharks, Turtles, Terrapins, Star Fish, Seahorses and even an Anaconda!
Thesis
Zoos and aquariums shouldn't exist because the confinement of the animals is psychologically damaging to them.
"To date, there is no compelling or even particularly suggestive evidence for the claim that zoos and aquariums promote attitude change, education and interest in conservation in visitors." That was the conclusion of the review published in the Animal Studies Repository. As this excerpt shows, zoos don't educate the public enough to justify them keeping animals captive.
Being contained in a zoo is harmful to animals' physical health; some enclosures are too small for the animals to complete their normal routines.
