The first few chapters are a structural base to the story, like most books. We learn about Kenny's life, his family, and his social life. We also are introduced to a friendship between Rufus and Kenny, which helps Kenny be less of a target to bullies. We also see another side of Byron in the first few chapters. We see the side that looks out for Kenny. In the middle of the story, we learn that the Watsons are going to Birmingham for the summer. Then, we are introduced to a new character in Birmingham, Grandma Sands. She is someone who has gone through segregation more than anyone in the Watson family. Then, something quite unexpected appears in the story. The church that Joey goes to is bombed. This is important towards the plot because it changes Kenny and his family's life, as well as many other people in the U.S.A. After the bombing, Kenny is a completely different person. He stopped playing with his dinosaurs and Rufus, and he loved playing with both of those. He gave his dinosaurs to Rufus. In the end, it is Byron that helps Kenny back into his old self. Byron, the person you'd least expect it from. Sometimes, family is the best medicine possible.
