Battle was a draw, confederates retreated(tried to preserve his troops from Union troops) Gave the victory to The Union because they had more men left than the conf.
shows importance of high ground/small terrain advantages because soldiers couldn't see through corn and shot blindly
Confederates retreated under the bridge to fix injuries but the McClellan didn't pursue them. (could've ended war)

Gettysburg
General Lee needs a big victory.Lee sweeps north in west Virginia, but union army moves north to parallel Lee's army.

Union troops lined up and Lee's plan was to get around and cut their size, union troops held their ground and charged at confederates when Union lost ammunition. Confederates retreated.
Pickett's charge was a failed attempt by Lee as union troops held the flank. Loses 1/3 of his army and last offense move
Lincoln Writes his dedication to Gettysburg, and doesn't mention Slavery or the War. Gettysburg then becomes a National Cemetery, for both the confederate and Union troops.

Union Troops disliked General Grant b/c he was willing to sacrifices his soldiers to get a victory! (high casualty rates from this). President Lincoln loved Grant for this reason, b/c unlike McClenllan he engaged.

Despite the victory, confederate troops were far too disorganized to pursue the retreating union.
Union troop commander: McClellan "Little Napoleon" was good at training men to fight but terrible when it came to actual battles. Didn't fight.
