The Spirit Level: Inequality effects, The notion that people are…
-
The notion that people are responsible for their own health is fuelled by rational choice theory – that growing obesity is a result of more people increasingly valuing present consumption more highly than future disbenefits
:one: This concept has been discounted therefore changes are going to societal conditions that have led to increasing obesity
:two: So if changing societal conditions created this problem then the logical answer to combat the issue is to change society for the benefit
Therefore not totalitarian or fascist to recommend and implement societal changes which will possibly limit individual choice but will reduce obesity which isn't caused by individual choice originally
:three: Peoples false control complex. It isn't their choice. They are a product of the limited choices presented to them
:four: KM "men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances of existing already, given and transmitted from the past"
