EM Waves - Coggle Diagram
EM Waves
Electromagnetic waves
Make up electromagnetic spectrum, arranged in order of frequency or wavelength
Properties of EM waves
- They transfer energy from one place to another
- They travel at the same speed of 3.0 x 10^8 m s-1 in vacuum. However, each EM wave travels with its own frequency and wavelength
- v=f(lamda) is applicable to all EM waves
- When EM wave travels from 1 medium to another speed and wavelength changes BUT frequency does not change
- They can travel through vacuum
- EM waves obey laws of reflection and refraction
- EM waves are transverse waves. They comprise electric and magnetic fields that oscillate at 90* to each other
- EM waves carry no electric charge
1, Radio waves(longest wavelength)
Long wave, short wave, medium wave,
-
Used for AM radio, Submarine, Communication
Very high Frequency waves, Ultra high frequency waves
-
Used for FM radio, over the air television
Uses: Microwave oven( penetrates food and causes the water molecules within to vibrate vigorously, generating heat that spreads throughout the food; communicating with satellites because they can penetrate the atmosphere. They also carry signals in a mobile network
-
Uses: Remote controllers, ear thermometers and intruder alarms
Radiation therapy, flaw detection
