They could approach analyzing the film in three different ways (formalist approach, realist approach, and contextualist approach).
Formalist approach
: Examines the film itself in relation to structure and form. Analyzes how the plot presents the story material and forces the viewer to see things at certain times and have reactions that would be different if presented in another way.
Realist approach
: Examines how the film represents reality. Studies how the filmmaker uses cinematic techniques to replicate a specific type of reality that he or she wants the audience to experience (love, insanity, memory).
Contextualist
approach: Examines the film as apart of a broader context...the particular time and place in society that influenced the film.
