Even after Congress passed a communication fee to lower the substitution cost, "it represented close to a year's wages for an unskilled laborer" (Sandel, 76). Ultimately, the option to hire a substitute was only of those who were able to afford such fee.
      - Supporters of the substitute option allowed for them to bypass the conscrption. Therefore, not having to serve at war.

Those with extreme cases may act out of the necessity of enlistment bonuses or educational incentives This claim objects the volunteer army "that operates in a society with substantial inequalities." (Sandel, 84). The inequalities of America show why in NYC in 2004 "70% of the volunteers in the city were black or Hispanic, recruited from lower-income communities." (Sandel, 83)
      - Supports of this army stand that "No one is forced to serve agisnt his or her will, andthose willing to serve can decide of miltay service is perable.. to their other alternnatives." (Sandel, 80). Also, those who seve are given benefits and pay... FINISH THIS SENTENCE AND CORRECT TYPOS.
    - - The objection from a libertarian stance claims conscription is a form of slavery. Additionally, "it implies that the state owns its citizens... including forcing them to fight and risk their lives at war." (Sandel, 79). A utilitarian position may oppose due a limit in choice which may reduce overall happiness.
      - Those who are for conscription would argue military service is a civic virtue and deepens our Democratic society. By having the honor to serve our country; "military service is not just another job; its a civic obligation." (84).

The argument claims the decision to abide by a contact before undergoing nine months may be tainted after the pregnancy period. Additionally, a financial burden may taint our choice or THERE COULD BE lack of informed consent, therefore making an involuntary choice.
      - Another objection is constant with the idea certain things don't have monetary value. This claim suggest, "treating babies and pregnancy as commodities degrades them" (Sandel, 96). By giving them a value we "use them as instruments of profit" (Sandel, 97).
