Waves (D8 through to D29)
Forces and waves
Rope Wave
Water Wave
Earthquake Wave
Materials and Waves
Medium
A medium is a any substance that a wave moves through
A rope is a meduim for a rope wave
Water is a medium for an ocean wave
Mechanical waves
Light is a wave that can transfer energy through empty space
Rope waves, sound waves, earthquake waves and ocean waves are all mechanical waves
Energy and Waves
Earthquake waves use kinetic energy
Ocean waves use kinetic energy
Waves can be clasified by how they move
Tranverse Waves
Ina tranverse wave the direction in which the wave treavels is perpendicular
Tranverse means cross or cross-wise
The wave itself moves cross wise as compared with the verticle motion of the medium
Longitide Wave
In a longitide wave, the wave travels in the same direction as the disturbance
Sound waves are longitide waves
Vocab terms
Crest
The highest point in a wave
Trough
The lowest point in a wave
Amplitude
The distance between a line through the middle of a wave and a crest or trough
Frequency
Measures how often a wave occurs
How frequency and wavelength are related
As the frequency increases the wavelength decreases
This works the same the other way so as the frequency decreases the wavelength increases
