Interaction Fundamentals
-
-
Affordances
False
There is perceptual information, but no affordance or incorrect affordance
-
Hidden
There is no perceptual information, but there is (idiomatically designed) affordance
e.g. iPhone drop-down menu control, automatic door (walk closer, open)
-
Def: The perceived properties of a design element that give clues about how to interact with it (communicates action possibilities)
Interaction Design
Defining behaviors for a system that engages the full
spectrum of its user’s perception, cognition, and movements
Differs from visual design in its closer and more complex relationship to user behavior and context.

-
Typical Design Errors
-
-
-
- No context sensitivity - offend user
- Poor Response - no feedback
-
3 Golden Rules
- Place the users in control
novice: watch video; later, allow them to skip - shortcut, otherwise lose satisfaction
allow undo and redo, have flexibility
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Reduce the user’s memory load
-
-
-
-
-
- Make the interface consistent
e.g. something looks like trash can, user can drag things to the trash can;
if something looks clickable, if should be clickable
-
-
If past interactive models have created user expectations, do not make changes unless there is a compelling reason to do so
Models
-
-
-
Implementation model
interface “look and feel” coupled with supporting information that describe interface syntax and semantics - code
-
-
-
Model Formation
As a user interacts, his/her mental model is revised whenever s/he must explicitly revisit it, usually because of a breakdown such as unfulfilled expectations or unclear representations
During a breakdown, the conceptual model is revisited as the system with which the interaction goes from ready-to-hand to present-at-hand
Ready-to-hand
do not have to change/form mental model
know how to use it, extension of you
Our normal involvement with tools, where we neither notice them nor theorize about them and instead regard them casually or not at all as we attempt to achieve something.
-
Present-at-hand
The moment we truly notice something as it leaps into view, standing apart from any utility or purpose, just as a thing in itself

-
Information Presentation
-
-
-
-
Color display
adds an extra dimension to an interface and can help the user understand complex information structures
