Who can Join a Union?
Above 16 years of age and employed in trade, occupation/industry of the union
A student of an educational institution cannot be a member unless they is bona fide wrokman and above 18 years of age
3.Workers in the public sector can only join unions formed by workers in the same occupations, department or ministry
Members below 18 years of ages not given voting rights on matters of:-
b) imposition of levy
c) dissolution of the trade union amendments of the rules of the TU
a) strikes and locckouts
Registration of a Trade Union
A trade union must apply to the Director- General of Trade Unions within one month of the date on which it was established
If the one month is insufficient, a request for an extension up to six months can be made to the Director-General
Power of Director-General
To extend the period during which a union is required to apply for registration
To call for further information if it necessary
To issue, cancel/withdraw the certifate of registration
The application for registration must fulfill the following requirements:-
It must be signed by at least by 7 members of the union
It must be made in the prescribed form
It must be accompanied by the prescribed fee
It must be accompanied by a printed copy of the rules of the union signed by members making the application
The applications must include;- Name/Ages/Address/Occupations of the union
Union Funds?
The union funds can only be used for paying:
Expenses related to salaries to the upkeep of an office
Expenses related to the settlement of a trade dispute
Expenses related to salaries for the employees of the union
Types of Unions
Private Sector Employees' Union
National Trade Union : National Unions attempts to cover all workers in the same industry, trade/occupation
In -house Trade Union : Members are all employed by the same employer and can/will be involved in different occupations
Public Sector Employees's Union
The public sector consists of the civil service, the statutory bodies and the local authorities
The Trade Union Act provides that workers in the public sector can only form
Employees' Union
To promote and protect the interests of their members
To negotiate and deal with trade unions of employees
